Just got back from a very hectic but satisfying AERA in New Orleans. Besides eating my way through the city, my favorite part was visiting the Backstreet Cultural Museum. It was a bit of a walk from the conference area, but totally worth the trek (and $8 admission). Fascinating stuff, and fun to go from talking/reading about community cultural wealth to seeing it in action. I also tremendously enjoyed our (very colorful) tour guide’s account of his sewing schedule. Incredible beadwork, highly recommend.
I also recommend the oyster po’boy at Majoria’s Commerce Restaurant, which I ate for lunch two days in a row because it was so good. Order it without the mayo in order to maximize the experience of eating hot, freshly deep-fried oysters; Sam Museus claimed that the mayo made the oysters cool off–sorry Sam, better luck next time.
