Slant was the first community event I ever organized as an undergrad, which got me hooked on campus organizing/programming. I remember the film crew they brought with them (Michael Kang, who went on to direct West 32nd and some other APA film classics) to Vandy–looks like the documentary will finally come out later this year. The guys were incredibly cool and we had a wonderful time hosting them…ages and ages ago.
This article on the history of the diamond engagement ring has some amusing bits:
N.W. Ayer conducted extensive surveys of consumer attitudes and found that most Americans thought diamonds were a luxury for the ultra-wealthy. Women wanted their men to spend money on “a washing machine, or a new car, anything but an engagement ring,” Ms. Gerety said in 1988. “It was considered just absolutely money down the drain.”

Visited this Baltimore mecca for the first time. It’s dusty like none other, but what a great place–the posted guidelines actually encourage greediness. Eleven books richer. Baltimore is fun!
