Open Rank Positions in Student Affairs

Position:  The University of Maryland’s 52-year-old and nationally-recognized graduate program in Student Affairs seeks candidates for two tenure-track faculty positions at open rank.  It is anticipated one will be a full or associate faculty member and one assistant professor faculty position.

Context: In 2011, the University of Maryland College of Education reorganized and created three departments from a former seven-department structure. The College Student Personnel concentration was in the former Counseling and Personnel Services (CAPS) Department (ranked #1 for 12 years in US News and World Report). The new department (Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education) includes the former CAPS department, Special Education, along with the Higher Education and International Education Policy concentrations. In the new department, College Student Personnel (to be renamed, Student Affairs) joins with the nationally-ranked Higher Education and International Education Policy to form a new program unit. Each area will function as a concentration with a number of shared doctoral core courses. The Student Affairs concentration offers the M.A. with thesis option, M.Ed., and Ph.D. degrees.

Description: Faculty in this program engage in an active research, teaching, and service agenda. Areas of teaching expertise for these position(s) should include one or more of the following: (1) student development theory, (2) student learning theory, (3) diversity and social justice, (4) assessment and evaluation, (5) history, philosophy, and practice of student affairs, (6) organizational dimensions of student affairs, or (7) international student affairs. Faculty will engage in the on-going creation of the new department unit, leadership and management of the student affairs concentration, curriculum design and outcomes assessment, and support for the student affairs learning community.

Required Qualifications: Position responsibilities include: conducting an on-going program of focused research, seeking and securing external funding, teaching graduate courses, providing internship supervision, and supervising master’s seminar papers and theses as well as doctoral dissertations. Commitment and ability to prepare students to work with culturally and personally diverse individuals are essential. Preferred candidates will demonstrate a social justice orientation to their teaching, be active in professional associations, demonstrate collaboration with student affairs practitioners, and have work experience in student affairs.

Qualifications for the Position at All Ranks:

*       Doctoral degree in college student personnel, higher education, or closely related field. (required; must be conferred by August 2012) *       Demonstrated excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring diverse students. *       Demonstrated expertise in research methods and methodologies

Qualifications for the Assistant Professor Rank  (required):

*       Evidence of, or potential for, the development of a clear and focused research agenda. *       Demonstrated record of, or potential for, securing external funding

Qualifications for the Associate or Full Professor Rank (required):

*       Demonstrated record of focused research, appropriate for rank. *       Demonstrated record of securing external funding, appropriate for rank. *       Record of high-quality service commensurate with associate or full professor rank.

Recruiting more “full-pay” students — those who don’t need financial aid — is seen as a key goal in public higher education, a sector traditionally known for its commitment to access. At public doctoral and master’s institutions, more admissions directors cited the recruitment of full-pay students as a key strategy than cited providing aid for low-income students. (At doctoral institutions, the gap was 47 percent to 40 percent, and at master’s institutions, the gap was 45 percent to 38 percent).

Lucido says it is important for colleges to be honest about their motivations for going for more out-of-state or international students. In many cases, he says, “this isn’t about globalization or increased educational diversity. They need the money.” He praises the University of California System (a system that could have tremendous diversity within its own state) for being forthright about this motive, but says that many others are not. (Very few colleges, even among the minority of institutions that meet the full need of admitted applicants, extend that policy to international students, so recruiting outside the United States frequently focuses on those with the means to pay.)

Thacker says that the ways colleges are using tuition discounting — not just to reach low-income students, but to attract well-off students who don’t want to pay full costs — have left many prospective students “cynical” about the process. “I think students are very suspicious of colleges because their actions are not in line with their values.”
