david chappell on ross douthat/bad religion

Last week some historian friends and I were emailing back and forth in pain over the excerpt from Ross Douthat’s new book Bad Religion that was printed in the Times, esp re: Douthat’s overly rosy interpretation of David Chappell’s (historian, not comedian/resident of Yellow Springs, Ohio) work on the civil rights movement. Anyway, Chappell’s response (with a link to the original Douthat column): http://histsociety.blogspot.com/2012/04/david-l-chappell-responds-to-ross.html

Another historian, Mark Silk, did a paragraph by paragraph critique of Douthat: http://www.religionnews.com/blogs/mark-silk/bad-douthat
